Performance + Recovery
You Are Training Hard and the Results Have Stalled.
When effort no longer produces progress, or recovery takes longer than it should, the problem is usually not discipline. Steadfast identifies the physiologic restraint limiting your output and repeatability.
Find My Starting PointYou Might Recognize This.
A plateau is rarely about working less hard. It usually shows up as a ceiling you keep hitting no matter how you adjust your training.
- Progress has flattened despite consistent, quality training
- Recovery between sessions takes longer than it used to
- Performance is inconsistent from day to day
- Elevated resting heart rate or disrupted sleep during hard blocks
- You feel you are doing everything right without the response
- More volume only seems to make things worse
A Plateau Is a Signal, Not a Verdict.
Hitting a ceiling usually means one physiological system can no longer keep pace with the demand you are placing on it. Adding volume to a system that is already the bottleneck rarely helps.
Output and recovery depend on oxygen delivery and utilization, fuel availability and efficiency, autonomic and hormonal regulation, and the inflammatory cost of the work you are doing.
Steadfast identifies which of these is currently the primary restraint, so training and recovery can target the real limitation instead of the symptom.
What Steadfast Evaluates.
- Training history, load patterns and plateau timeline
- Aerobic capacity and oxygen utilization (VO2max)
- Resting metabolic rate and fuel efficiency
- Relevant laboratory and hormonal markers
- Recovery, sleep and autonomic context
- Inflammatory and regenerative burden
What May Be Driving It
Possible Physiologic Restraints.
Stalled performance and poor recovery frequently connect to several of the five Primary Physiologic Restraints. These are possibilities to evaluate, not conclusions.
Cardiopulmonary Delivery Limitation
Caps how much oxygen can be delivered and used during sustained effort.
Oxidative / Mitochondrial Limitation
Limits sustainable energy production and endurance at intensity.
Fuel Regulation / Metabolic Dysfunction
Restricts efficient access to and use of available fuel.
Neuroendocrine / Autonomic Dysregulation
Disrupts recovery, sleep and the hormonal signaling that drives adaptation.
Inflammatory / Regenerative Burden
Consumes recovery resources and slows adaptation between sessions.
These are possibilities, not a diagnosis. The goal is to determine which restraint is currently having the greatest effect on your desired outcome.
How Capacity-Based Medicine Approaches Plateaus.
Instead of prescribing more training or another recovery gadget, Steadfast identifies the dominant restraint capping your output and builds the strategy around removing it.
We then reassess objective markers (capacity, efficiency and recovery indicators) to confirm the ceiling actually moved, and adjust if it did not.
Identification first. Treatment second. Progress measured.
Ways to Work With Steadfast
Possible Care Routes.
The right starting point depends on the complexity of the problem, the testing required and the level of physician oversight needed. Our care team helps determine the recommended path.
Performance Capacity Assessment
A physician-led performance evaluation with VO2max and metabolic testing to identify the restraint capping your output and recovery.
Learn morePerformance Pathway
A focused 90-day pathway to identify the limitation, intervene, and reassess objective performance progress.
Learn moreMetabolic Capacity Assessment
Physician-interpreted resting and exercise metabolic testing when conditioning and fuel efficiency are central concerns.
Learn morePossible Clinical Tools.
Depending on what the evaluation reveals, care may involve a range of tools. None is chosen until the limitation is understood.
- VO2max and metabolic testing
- Training-load and conditioning adjustments
- Fuel and nutrition strategy
- Recovery and autonomic-regulation support
- Hormonal evaluation and management when appropriate
- Regenerative or tissue care when indicated
No tool is selected until the relevant physiology, goals and risks have been evaluated. Tools are chosen to match the limitation, never applied as a default menu.
Physician-Led From the First Question.
Every Steadfast pathway is overseen by Dr. Sean McGovern, who integrates medical evaluation, performance physiology, metabolic testing and regenerative medicine to determine what is most likely limiting you, and what should be done first.
